Understanding Cancer Related Tests: Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) and Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP)

As you go through cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care, your doctor will probably order blood tests for you routinely. Bloodwork is necessary to monitor your general health and to check for potential side effects of your treatment regimen. Two tests that you may notice ordered by your doctor are a Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) and a Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP).

A CMP and BMP are similar blood panels that provide information about the body’s chemical balance, kidney function, and metabolism. A BMP tests for 8 different substances in your blood with a primary focus on metabolism, electrolyte, and chemical balance. A CMP test provides information on 14 substances that include those tested in the BMP and 6 additional tests to monitor your liver function. The decision regarding which test your doctor orders will be based on what values they need to monitor.

All the values in these metabolic panels have a “normal” range. The “normal ranges” will vary amongst the different substances being tested. The results of these tests will provide your doctor with valuable information regarding how your cancer and treatment are impacting your overall health. Our team at Iris have broken down all the components of a CMP/BMP to help you better understand your care.
